Singapore, 8th July 2009 – Many have heard of donut chain, Donut Empire™, but not many know the story of Madam Tan Yak Tang, who is the pillar of strength behind the company.
Madam Tan, the mother of Donut Empire founders Mr. Sky and Steven Chiew, is one of the oldest employees at Donut Empire’s production factory. Affectionately known as the “live wire” by her fellow employees, the 70-year-old’s enthusiasm and passion can be seen when she is performing her duties. She rolls out thousands of donuts daily at Donut
Empire’s Tanjong Katong Road café – and simultaneously, supervising production and delivery, as well as training new personnel.
Although both Mr. Sky and Steven Chiew prefer their mother to lead a more relaxed lifestyle, Madam Tan still relishes the idea of working with Donut Empire the moment its first outlet was launched. “Every day is full of excitement and challenges. There is never a dull moment as I learn something new daily,” claims the avid worker. Given her extensive experience in the food business, she has much knowledge to contribute to
Donut Empire. A firm believer of life-long learning, Madam Tan is self-motivated and is a role model for people her age. When she first started work at Donut Empire, Madam Tan rolled up her sleeves to learn how to operate the donut machine from scratch, similar to other employees.
Madam Tan believes everyone can contribute to any organization in his or her unique way, regardless of age. Hence, she encourages other men and women to continue working even as they get older. “Creative problem solving skills are the key to life-long employability, not age,” highlights the strong-minded lady, who is also a grandmother.
Madam Tan is the cornerstone of success for her sons. “I was overjoyed when they told me they were launching Donut Empire. I gave them my full support from day one,” said Madam Tan, who is proud of her sons’ success. Donut Empire is currently the largest donut chain in Singapore and is launching new outlets in Dubai and Jakarta in July 2009.
